Ancient New Zealand: Squawkzilla and the Giants
When humans first arrived, Aotearoa New Zealand was a land of giant flightless birds, seabirds and insects. Until recently we knew little about the animals that lived in our distant past.
Over the last 20 years palaeontologists have been excavating sites near Waipara, North Canterbury and St Bathans, Central Otago. What they have found has given us a remarkable snapshot of life during two formative moments in Aotearoa New Zealand’s prehistory.
This online exhibition is representative of Ancient New Zealand: Squawkzilla and the Giants, a temporary exhibition which ran from 13 December 2019 to 16 August 2020 at Canterbury Museum.
