Canterbury Museum cares for a collection of 76 parasols which were donated between 1948 and 2009.

In this talk to the Museum Friends in May 2023. Julia Bradshaw, Senior Curator Human History, describes the different types of parasols and their importance as an item of fashion and status. She discusses the use of parasols in the context of nineteenth and early twentieth-century Canterbury and New Zealand, and explains the characteristics of the parasols in Canterbury Museum’s collection. Julia will also provide details about some of the owners of the parasols, including Canterbury author Sarah Courage, Georgina Bowen and Ellen Reeves.
